The race starts in Beaufort West municipal sport grounds, works its way through the town and to a gate. Once the riders pass through the gate into the Karoo National Park, they immediately turn right & follow a jeep track past Bulkraal, a picnic site, onto a section of tar. After travelling 2km on the tar, the 18 km riders turn left onto a jeep track which leads to the gate that was used to enter the park, following the same route through town back to the sports grounds. The other riders continue on the tar, past the Karoo National Park main camp to the Potlikkertjie circle route intersection. The 85km cyclists go up the Klipspringer Pass & follow the circle route. The 43km riders turn left at the intersection, ride 2km on a dirt road before turning onto a jeep track. The 85km riders, after completing the circle route, use the same jeep track which will take the cyclists to the main gate of the park. Here a short stretch of tar brings them to the last piece of jeep track that the riders follow to the gate they exit on their way back to the sports grounds.
The Klipspringer Pass (part of the 85km route) elevates cyclists 400+ meters while travelling a 2.5km section of tar. But… that’s not the end of the climb. The dirt road still entails a good 2km of climbing, which might not be as steep as the tar section, but has small rises that’ll have the muscles straining in no time. The views from the top of the mountain over the low-lying areas is breathtaking & well worth the sweat. |
